Tube decoration does more than add colour to packaging. It influences brand recognition, shelf impact, print consistency, surface feel and the overall perception of product quality.

Offset, flexographic, screen and digital printing each produce different results. However, they are not always interchangeable. The appropriate method depends on the tube structure, artwork, production volume and desired finish.

Understanding these differences can help brands create artwork that is both visually attractive and suitable for commercial production.

Some tubes use one primary printing method, while others combine printing with decorative effects such as screen printing, hot stamping, metallic substrates or special coatings.

1. Offset Printing

Offset printing is commonly used for decorating extruded plastic tubes. The tube body is printed after it has been formed, using multiple colour stations to transfer the artwork onto its curved surface.

Strengths of offset printing

Offset printing can provide:

  • Clean and consistent solid colours
  • Efficient production for larger quantities
  • Good reproduction of text, logos and line graphics
  • Multi-colour printing in a single production process
  • A smooth finish suitable for personal-care packaging

It is often used for skincare, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and personal-care tubes with relatively clean graphic designs.

What artwork works best?

Offset printing performs well with:

  • Solid colour blocks
  • Logos and typography
  • Simple illustrations
  • Repeated patterns
  • Clearly separated colours

Very fine gradients and photographic images may require simplification or specialised colour separation. Because the colours are printed sequentially, artwork should also account for registration tolerances between colours.

Key consideration

Offset printing is generally associated with PE extrusion tubes rather than laminate web printing. Brands should therefore confirm the tube structure before choosing this method.

2. Flexographic Printing

Flexographic printing, often shortened to flexo, uses flexible printing plates to transfer ink onto a roll of laminate material before the tube body is formed.

It is widely used for ABL and PBL tubes because the laminate can be printed in a controlled, roll-to-roll process.

Strengths of flexographic printing

Flexo offers:

  • Consistent printing across commercial production
  • Good reproduction of text and detailed graphics
  • Strong solid-colour coverage
  • Efficient printing for large quantities
  • Compatibility with different laminate surfaces
  • Multiple colours and varnish options

Because the laminate is printed while flat, flexo offers a broad decoration area and can support detailed designs when the artwork and printing plates are properly prepared.

What artwork works best?

Flexo is suitable for:

  • Brand graphics and illustrations
  • Detailed text
  • Solid colours
  • Patterns
  • Controlled gradients
  • Process-colour or separated-colour artwork

Artwork must be adapted to the technical characteristics of flexographic printing. Small text, fine lines, tonal transitions and overlapping colours should be reviewed before plate production.

Key consideration

Final printed colour can be affected by the laminate base. The same ink may appear different on white, transparent, metallized or holographic material.

A physical colour reference and production proofing process are therefore more reliable than evaluating colour only on a monitor.

3. Screen Printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh directly onto the tube surface. It creates a heavier ink deposit than many conventional printing methods, producing strong colour coverage and a distinctive visual or tactile effect.

Screen printing can be used as the main decoration for a minimalist design or combined with another printing method as an accent.

Strengths of screen printing

Screen printing offers:

  • Strong and opaque colour
  • Excellent visibility on dark or coloured tubes
  • A slightly raised or tactile finish
  • Sharp logos and typography
  • Premium-looking selective decoration
  • Compatibility with curved tube surfaces

It is especially effective for designs that rely on a small number of bold visual elements.

What artwork works best?

Screen printing is ideal for:

  • Logos
  • Product names
  • Bold typography
  • Simple line illustrations
  • Selective highlights
  • Minimalist premium designs

It is less suitable for photographic images, complex gradients or artwork containing many closely registered colours.

Key consideration

Screen printing may require separate screens and production passes for each colour. Adding more colours increases complexity, registration requirements and production cost.

A simple one- or two-colour screen design can sometimes create a stronger premium impression than a highly complex graphic.

4. Digital Printing

Digital printing transfers artwork directly from a digital file without using conventional printing plates.

Its greatest advantage is flexibility. Designs can be changed more easily, making it useful for prototypes, market testing, personalisation or selected short-production applications.

Strengths of digital printing

Depending on the system, digital printing can provide:

  • Fast artwork setup
  • No conventional plate production
  • Detailed graphics
  • Gradients and photographic imagery
  • Variable designs or personalisation
  • Efficient prototyping and short-run development

What artwork works best?

Digital printing can support:

  • Photographic designs
  • Complex gradients
  • Multiple design variations
  • Limited editions
  • Personalised graphics
  • Prototype packaging

Key consideration

Digital printing is not automatically the best choice for commercial tube production. Available technology, ink adhesion, tube material, production speed, colour consistency and unit cost must all be evaluated.

A digitally printed mock-up may also look different from a commercially printed tube produced using flexo, offset or screen printing. It should be treated as a design and colour-development reference rather than a perfect representation of mass production.

Printing Method vs Decorative Effect

Printing and decoration are related, but they are not the same.

Offset, flexo, screen and digital printing apply the main graphics. Additional processes can then enhance selected areas or change the tube’s surface appearance.

Common decorative effects include:

Hot stamping

Applies metallic foil to selected areas such as a logo, border or product name. It can create gold, silver or other reflective accents.

Metallic laminate

Uses the tube material itself to create a metallic appearance. Selected areas can be covered with white ink while others remain exposed for contrast.

Holographic effects

Create shifting reflections and a more expressive shelf appearance. Artwork must be designed around the movement of the substrate.

Matte or glossy finish

Changes the overall surface character of the tube. Matte finishes can feel soft and understated, while gloss finishes create stronger colour and reflection.

Selective varnish

Highlights particular artwork areas by combining contrasting gloss levels or surface effects.

The most effective decoration is usually created by considering the printing method, base material and finishing process together from the beginning.

How to Choose the Right Printing Method

Choose offset printing when:

  • The tube uses a compatible PE extrusion structure
  • Production volume is relatively high
  • The artwork uses clean colours, text and line graphics
  • Efficient multi-colour production is required

Choose flexographic printing when:

  • The product uses an ABL or PBL tube
  • Consistency across a printed laminate web is important
  • The artwork contains detailed graphics or multiple colours
  • The project requires reliable commercial-scale production

Choose screen printing when:

  • The design uses bold, simple visual elements
  • Strong ink opacity is required
  • The brand wants a tactile or premium accent
  • The artwork contains only a limited number of colours

Consider digital printing when:

  • A prototype or limited-edition design is required
  • The artwork changes frequently
  • Personalisation is important
  • The selected tube supplier has a validated digital-production process

Artwork Factors That Affect Print Quality

Regardless of the method, several artwork decisions influence the final result.

Colour references

Pantone or approved physical colour standards provide a more reliable production target than colours viewed only on a screen.

Base material

White, transparent, metallized and holographic substrates affect how inks appear. White ink may be needed beneath selected areas to control opacity and colour.

Registration tolerance

Extremely fine outlines and tightly overlapping colours may expose minor movement between printing stations. Artwork should allow for realistic production tolerances.

Text and line size

Very small text or fine lines may fill in, break or become difficult to read. Minimum specifications should be confirmed before final artwork approval.

Tube seam and sealing area

Important logos, text and graphic elements should be positioned away from laminate seams, sealing zones and other technically restricted areas.

Artwork distortion

Graphics designed on a flat layout will wrap around a cylindrical tube. A digital or physical mock-up helps evaluate how the design appears from the front, side and back.

Can Multiple Decoration Methods Be Combined?

Yes. Combining techniques can create contrast and improve brand hierarchy.

Examples include:

  • Flexo printing with hot-stamped logo details
  • Offset printing with selective screen printing
  • Screen printing on a coloured or transparent PE tube
  • Flexo printing on metallic or holographic laminate
  • Matte surface finishing with selective glossy elements

More decoration does not always mean better packaging. Each additional process introduces cost, registration requirements and production complexity.

The strongest solution is the one that supports the brand concept while remaining stable and repeatable in commercial production.

From Artwork Concept to Commercial Tube

A practical decoration-development process should include:

  1. Confirm the tube structure and base material.
  2. Select the primary printing method.
  3. Identify metallic, transparent or special-effect areas.
  4. Adapt the artwork to production tolerances.
  5. Establish physical colour references.
  6. Produce an artwork proof or representative mock-up.
  7. Review the graphics on the actual tube shape.
  8. Conduct a production trial when necessary.
  9. Approve the final standard for commercial manufacturing.

This process helps align the creative design with what can be manufactured consistently.
